Answer: Thank you. We will correct it.
Question: My granddaughter, age,12, is allergic to many things, milk and eggs apparently being the worst.  She is also allergic to dog dander and dog saliva, although the family had a dog until almost three years ago.  The dog was older than the child.

I have also had a dog since my granddaughter was born.  Three years ago my dog (cocker spaniel) died.  We got two more cockers, puppies.

My daughter is not allowing my daughter to visit at my home any longer as she says my granddaughter  has a reaction to my dogs.  Benadryl seems to handle the sniffling that occurs.

While this situation is very stressful to me, I feel my daughter is making my granddaughter's allergies worse by totally keeping her away from any allergins.   Not just the dogs.  At Christmas I made some cookies that had 2 tablespoons of milk in the whole batch.   My granddaughter accidently ate one cookie.  My daughter and son-in-law made the biggest deal out of it and I worry, I know, they are making my granddaughter paranoid.

Does totally excluding someone with allergies make them more sensitive to the allergin?

Thank you for your help.  Shirley Wright
Answer: These is a complex situation that would be best answered by the allergist that manages your granddaughter. In general , the goal is to prevent signs and symptoms that interfere with lifestyle.
Avoidance is an effective form of treatment but may interfere with the lifestyle of the patient. Pre-treatment of signs and symptoms may be effective to allow the patient to visit the environment of an animal whether it is a relative's home or a friend's home. Benadryl, however,  may not be the most effective treatment.

Total avoidance of milk presents great difficulty because of the widespread use of milk in a variety of foods. Many milk allergic patient's may be able to tolerate milk when cooked into a food.

Again,. without specific knowledge of your granddaughter's allergenicity, one cannot give any specific advice.
